I find this game very interesting, as it is in many ways very unusual for the genre. The main thing that makes this RPG unique, is that there is no experience or gold as such. You power-up by exploring the world, finding secrets and solving puzzles. Therefore, power-ups are limited, so you can't just mindlessly invest your time into grinding if the upcoming boss fight is too tough. And it means that you need to think very carefully what skill, stat or piece of equipment you are going to take next, read and read over the manual with open damage formulas, which the author kindly provided you with. The game is very challenging, even on the lowest difficulty level. Make sure you have investigated each corner of currently available world before you enter key boss fights. I am a kind of gamer who enjoys hard games, because you can always come back to them. Moreover, this game has lots of freedom in customizing your character and selecting gaming style, which again, means high replay value. The battle system is deep, yet not too overcomplicated. I've just beaten the game for the first time (as a mage\/techmathurgist), and I'm sure I'll come back to Celia's Quest someday to experiment with different character builds or play it over on higher difficulty level. The game took me 33 hours, by the way, considering I had to start it from scratch once because of a dumb decision I made in the beginning. The story, like I said before, is here mostly to drive the gameplay. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the way it is introduced, its humor, and the atmosphere of an absurd fantasy world. The only possible downside of the game I can think of is a bit rough difficulty curve. In my opinion, the beginning should be slightly easier. The first serious boss fight is too hard unless you do everything right. Mid\/endgame, on the other hand, are balanced much better. I recommend this little game to hardcore gamers, especially those who dislike random encounters and mindless grind. Totally worth playing and money spent.. The best part of Celia's Quest is it's comedy. The game world is as strange and weird as the characters who live in it, and at time it reminded my of Terry Pratchett's Discworld.This game is funny and kind of crazy. You can expect puns and jokes around every corner and while the graphics are not exactly pretty, they do work surprisingly well with this kind of comedic setting. It's basically a interactive comedy (with some difficult RPG combat mixed in). So if that's something you think you'll enjoy I would like to stop here and recommend this game to you right away. However if you're still not sure let me elaborate a little more. Celia's Quest is an adventure game with an RPG styled combat system. And while the combat system is fairly deep, allowing you to customize your build by choosing skills and allocating stat points to fit your own play style, there are some distinct differences from a typical RPG. First being that you don't level up, instead you need to find and use power ups. Many of them are well hidden and rewarded to you for completing an optional puzzle or dungeon which means that if you miss or ignore them you'll most likely struggle with the combat. Though, if an area is too difficult you can always go search for more secrets elsewhere and come back again when you've powered up your stats. Also, since enemies are visable on the map you can sometimes outrun them if need be.Second thing is that equipment and items does not just simply make you stronger (some do), but are instead mostly balanced around being useful in certain situations or in certain locations. Since you can only borrow one equipment of a specific type at any time this means you might have to go back to town to switch them out occasionally. Also worth noting is that there is no gold for you to spend in shops either. You'll level up merchants supply by trading them precious craft kits to expand their supply of "borrow-able items". It's also possible to gamble (to get a random buff or healing item) by spending monster tears that you'll get for clearing an encounter - but that's it. Do keep in mind that items and opportunities to get them are (kind of) limited since once an area is cleared of enemies they don't come back!I'll end this review with a list of PRO's and CON's to help you decide.+ Funny story, characters, dialogue etc+ Challenging combat (if that's your cup of tea)+ Good exploration with many hidden secrets (feels inspired by the Zelda series)+ Interesting and challenging puzzles (if that's your cup of tea)+ New Game+ feature with additional content- The graphics are not pretty (enemy sprites look fine)- Some of the maps are too cluttered and passages are narrow making them hard to navigate.- Challenging combat (if that's NOT your cup of tea)- A lot of running back and forth to town to get healed up (especially in the beginning)- In game skill descriptions are not enough to plan a build (READ THE MANUAL!). Unfortunately, most of them looks generic and not attracting my attention. But Celia's Quest charmed me when I first saw it. It was so much different!The indie games attract me because you can feel the very soul of developer, not a common thing for mainstream AAA projects. And in Celia's Quest this feeling is very strong. The story, the characters, the world: it all brings the mark of care and love. Just read the game manual and you'll see it yourself.This game becomes a truly place for rest for me, when I leave this dull world and enter the bright, colorful and happy world of Celia's valley, filled with interesting and funny places, characters and monsters (my personal favorite is Fast Mini Bear :) ). Another thing I like about this game is its nonviolent behaviour. Actually, you are not even killing monsters in the normal sense of this word, you are beating 'em so hard, that they just cry and go away :)Also, I like the idea of skill tokens and tutors. Instead of endlessly earning XP points, you should find some thing calling a token, that can be exchanged for a new spell or skill. Unfortunately, these tokens are often located in the chests behind powerful bosses :) But sometimes you can just explore the area a little bit to find it.The game is filled with interesting small puzzles. For example, in the Sandy Place you should activate the towers in the correct order, and in the Fire Temple you should pull the triggers to prevent yourself from roasting on fire, and so on.Some bad parts of this game: only one music track for all fights. Not a bad one though, it is humming in my head right now :) Also all monsters are depicted on the map by identical lantern-like sprites. But on the fight screen each monster is of course different and drawn with the same love as the rest of this game. To me its a game whose combat system was a little tricky at first, but ater a few hours (and a few upgrades!) became much easier and enjoyable as its not just a "click any attack and win the battle" type of game but relys on being a little more considerate of which decisions you choose to win the battle. A fun mix of story and humor had me giggling at Celia's Quest which I haven't really done since Borderlands... there is no xp to be gained and no traditional "level ups" which at first seems lacking but the more I play the more im starting to enjoy it as im finding myself playing the game without fighting hoards of monsters in a tireless grind, I still have much to play (yay) so im hoping I continue to giggle and push through to every last corner of this colourful world 7\/10
